Case Study 3 - John Humphries
What results are achieved from the leadership award?
As a school we registered 44 students with Trixter to follow the X-bike young leaders award. Throughout the award the group was split into pairs as 22 in each class, and therefore only 11 were on the bikes at any one time. This did cause some frustrations with some students as the time spent on the bikes was less than expected.
As a result of the above the award was delivered over 2 terms and out of 44 who opted to take the award, approximately 38 have been successful in passing the award, and are confident in leading small sessions on the x-bikes.
What's the value of the QCA and league table points now?
38 x 46 points.
How did you fund the bikes?
The bikes were partly funded by the sports college, and also YST as part of their project. This allowed us to purchase 10 bikes and provide training for members if the PE department.
What are the overall outcomes of the project?
Having had the year to deliver the course to a year 11 cohort, it has been very successful. It has allowed the students to apply their GSCE knowledge of health and fitness, and methods of training to the X-Bikes. It has also allowed the students an opportunity to lead at national conferences and also at various events within the school, such as Open evenings.
The bikes have also been used in health and fitness lessons at KS3 and have been successful in engaging potentially disaffected pupils in PE with particular reference to health and have been very successful.
How are the bikes are being used outside of the curriculum?
An X Biking Club has been set up after school during the winter months by our NQT and was attended regularly by a small number of girls.
A staff X-Biking class has now been running on Friday evenings to allow staff access to the equipment and experience the benefits of completing a session on the X-Bikes.
